What You Need to Know

Your ED visa has been approved — congratulations. Here is everything you need to understand about extensions, reporting, and re-entry permits.

Understanding Your 90-Day ED Visa

The ED visa to study Thai at a language school is not a 6-month, 8-month, or 12-month visa. It is a 90-day visa that can be extended.
1st ED Visa — Up to 8 Months Total
Initial entry 90 days
1st extension 30 days
2nd extension 60 days
3rd extension 60 days
Up to 8 months total stay
2nd ED Visa — Stay up to 14 Months
Initial entry 90 days
1st extension 60 days
2nd extension 30 days
Up to 14 months total stay

Note: The ED visa for language schools is different from the ED visa for universities, so the conditions and extension rules may vary.

Visit Our School Within 7 Days of Arrival

Once you receive your 90-Day Single Entry Non-Immigrant ED Visa from a Thai embassy or consulate and enter Thailand, you must visit our school with your passport within 7 days.

We are required to submit copies of your passport and ED visa to the Ministry of Education in preparation for your extension.

Important: Do not delay — you have exactly 7 days from the date you enter Thailand to visit the school.

ED Visa Extensions

Once your first 90 days are close to ending, you will be required to extend your ED visa at Immigration on a regular basis.

Cost Per Extension ฿1,900 baht at Immigration
Standard Result 60-day extension if you can demonstrate active study
If Not Attending 30-day extension, or worst case 7 days to leave

Be prepared to be asked simple questions in Thai by the Immigration officer, such as “What is your name?”, “Where are you from?”, and “What do you like to eat?”. If you have been attending lessons and doing your homework, these will be easy to answer.

90-Day Address Report

Apart from extending your visa, you are required to report your address to Immigration every 90 days while in Thailand. This is not a visa extension.

Report Online

Submit your 90-day report online if the website is working. The window is 15 to 7 days before your actual report date.

Report in Person

Visit any Immigration office. Window is 15 days before to 7 days after your report date.

Use an Agent

Pay an agent to submit the report on your behalf. Convenient if you are unable to attend in person.

Late fine: Filing your 90-day report more than 7 days after the due date will result in a ฿2,000 baht fine.

DO NOT throw away the receipt from your previous 90-day report. Keep it and submit it along with the TM.47 form when you file your next report.

Re-Entry Permit

If you plan to leave Thailand while on an ED visa, you must apply for a re-entry permit first. Failure to do so will cancel your ED visa upon re-entering Thailand.
Single-Entry Permit
฿1,000

Valid for one departure and return. Reverts to single-use after re-entry.

Any Immigration office
Suvarnabhumi Airport
Don Mueang Airport
A re-entry permit is only valid as long as your current “extension of stay” stamp is valid. Each time you re-enter Thailand, your 90-day report countdown resets (Immigration counts the day you enter as Day 1, so your next report will be due in 89 days).

ED Visa Refund Policy

Our refund policy depends on which stage of the process your application reaches. Please read carefully before enrolling for ED Visa assistance.

Do we provide a refund?

Yes If your application is not approved by the Ministry of Education
No If your application is rejected by a Thai embassy, consulate, or immigration
Stage 1

MOE Approval — Refund Guaranteed

Getting an approval letter from the Ministry of Education is the first part of the process. All applicants must complete our application form and send us a copy of their passport with 12 passport-sized photos. After full payment is made, these documents are submitted to the Ministry of Education.

MOE rejects your application: Duke Language School will provide a full refund minus ฿2,000 administration fee.
While our visa assistance service is free, there is a ฿2,000 admin fee to cover our expenses in the event of a refund.
Stage 2

Visa Application — No Refund

Once your application is approved by the Ministry of Education, you have been granted permission to study Thai in Thailand. The next step is to get permission to stay by submitting the MOE approval letter to a Thai embassy, consulate, or immigration.

There is no refund if your application is rejected at this stage. Here are the reasons this may happen:

Choice of Embassy or Consulate

It is your responsibility to research before visiting a Thai embassy or consulate. Some are very strict while others are more lenient. The choice is yours to make, not ours.

Bad Record

Your application could be rejected due to a past criminal record, or if you’ve been blacklisted for previous offences like overstaying, border bouncing, applying for too many tourist visas, or working in Thailand illegally. No school can be responsible for your personal record.

Politics

If there is a conflict between Thailand and your home country, your chance of getting the education visa could be slim or near impossible. Check with the Thai embassy or consulate you plan to visit before making a commitment with our school.
